Fire Puts SoCal Youth Baseball League's Season in Jeopardy

A Southern California youth baseball league's season was in jeopardy after a structure fire destroyed part of a Palmdale youth complex.

Firefighters along with the Palmdale Sheriff's Station responded to a structure fire just after 7:30 p.m. Saturday. The fire scorched part of the Palmdale Pony Youth Baseball team's scoreboard, but it's the electrical wires on top and beneath the tower that are of concern.

Electrical wires that power the whole complex are underneath the tower. Without power, the upcoming season for the children preparing for next week's team tryouts could be in jeopardy because most of the league's games are played at night.

Sheriff's officials estimate that the fire caused $600 worth of damage and those who run the league are unsure of how they will pay for the damage.

"We don't think it's covered by insurance," said the league's president Russ Monette.

The Palmdale Pony Youth Baseball League has set up a GoFundMe page to raise funds to rebuild the tower and "rise from the ashes."

"We have had almost 15,000 kids come through our program, some even making it to the major leagues. We want to continue giving kids the chance to play our nation's pastime," the GoFundMe page says.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
