Fire Truck En Route to Crash Crashes; 1 Killed

MIRA LOMA, Calif. -- A 60-year-old West Covina man was killed and three firefighters were injured Wednesday when a Riverside County fire truck collided with a pickup truck at a Mira Loma intersection.

Agustin Nava Miramontes, the driver of the pickup truck, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, which was reported about 5 a.m. at Etiwanda Avenue and Van Buren Boulevard.

The crew of Cal Fire-Riverside County Engine 17 from Station 17 in Mira Loma had the truck's lights and sirens activated and were en route to a reported crash when the fire truck and pickup collided, according to Cal Fire and the California Highway Patrol.

A fire captain was treated at a hospital for a head laceration and released, fire Capt. Fernando Herrera said. Two firefighters were hospitalized with what were described as minor to moderate injuries.

Engine 17 was southbound on Etiwanda and the pickup was eastbound on Van Buren when the collision occurred, Herrera said from the crash scene. He said he did not know which vehicle faced red or green traffic signals just prior to the crash, which remains under investigation.
