Firefighters Battle Blaze at Recycling Plant in South Los Angeles

A fire at a recycling yard in South Los Angeles sent a large column of smoke skyward, officials said.

The fire was reported about 5:30 p.m. at 1981 W. Slauson Ave., said Erik Scott of the Los Angeles Fire Department.

Firefighters used large hose streams to douse the flames, and the Department of Water and Power has been summoned to deal with downed power lines, Scott said.

It's unclear if any structures are threatened, but no injuries have been reported.
