Flames tore through a strip mall in Montebello on Tuesday, sending a thick plume of black smoke into the air and doing heavy damage to a coin-laundry business and a restaurant.

The fire was reported at 11:35 p.m. in the 1100 block of West Whittier Boulevard, according to a Montebello Fire Department dispatcher. It burned away the roof of the strip mall and gutted the interiors of the businesses.

More than 50 firefighters battled the flames, and the fire was knocked down at 12:44 p.m.

The strip mall parking lot and some surrounding streets were flooded by the water and foam that was poured onto the fire.

There were no immediate reports of any injuries. The cause of the blaze was under investigation.
