Firefighters Find Baby Left in Shoebox

It’s a boy -- and he's had a rough start in life.

A group of firefighters returning from a routine call discovered the newborn inside a shoebox left at the front door of Station 31 in Paramount.

The baby was found last Friday, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

"Since most abandoned babies are never found alive, this boy is a lucky survivor, thanks to the observant crew members who spotted him," a department statement says.

The baby was believed to be four to eight hours old when found. The infant was assessed by paramedics, who found him "alert and in good health," then taken to Downey Community Hospital for further evaluation and care.

Under the "Safe Surrender" program, parents or adults with legal custody can confidentially hand over a newborn within 72 hours of birth to personnel at any fire station or hospital in Los Angeles County without fear of prosecution, as long as the baby shows no signs of abuse or neglect.
