Firefighters Contain 124-Acre Blaze Near Moreno Valley

Firefighters contained a 124-acre brush fire in Riverside County on Saturday night, officials said.

The "Smiley Fire" began about 3 p.m. off of Smiley Road near Vista Suelto Road (map), north of Moreno Valley, authorities said. It grew to more than 100 acres within about an hour and a half.

The fire briefly threatened structures shortly after it began, but firefighters were able to protect them, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

Cal Fire and the Riverside County firefighters and were expected to remain on scene overnight to mop up.
