Five people died in a collision amid a downpour on the I-5 Freeway in the Newhall Pass early Monday.
The collision involving as many as four vehicles occurred in southbound lanes near the junction with the Antelope (14) Valley Freeway and was reported at 12:14 a.m., California Highway Patrol Officer Anthony Martin said.
According to broadcast reports, a sedan containing six people spun out and was struck by a pickup truck.
In the sedan, three juveniles and an adult died; the youngest was 6- years-old, according to reports from the scene. One person in the pickup truck died, CHP Officer Julie Plummer told news crews at the scene.
Two survivors from the sedan were taken to hospitals. No other serious injuries were reported in the other vehicles.
The crash closed all southbound lanes, and Los Angeles-bound traffic was being diverted onto the truck route, according to the CHP, which hoped to have all lanes reopened by about 7 a.m.
Los Angeles firefighters worked to free some of the victims, who were trapped in the wreckage, but at least four people were believed to have died at the scene. No one with the fire department was available for immediate comment.
