ROLLING HILLS ESTATES, Calif. -- A semitrailer truck that might have lost its brakes struck several vehicles at a Rolling Hills Estate intersection Tuesday, injuring five people, one of them critically.

The truck was on a downhill slope before it entered the intersection at Crenshaw Boulevard and Palos Verdes Drive North. The wreck happened about 11:30 a.m., county fire Inspector Sam Padilla said.

A witness said the brakes were smoking just before the crash, according to a camera crew at the scene.

At least four vehicles were hit by the truck.
