Retired Police Officer Shoots Suspected Shoplifter Outside Home Depot

The retired police officer was arrested for shooting at a person.

A suspected shoplifter was shot by a former police officer Saturday outside a Home Depot in Riverside, the Riverside Police Department said.

The incident occurred on the 3300 block of Madison Street at approximately 4:10 p.m., according to the Riverside Police Department.

A person was believed to have walked out of the Home Depot without paying, and a retired police officer attempted to stop the suspected shoplifter, according to police. The retired officer fired two rounds at the person driving away, and one of those two shots struck the suspected shoplifter in the neck, according to Riverside police.

The wound was not believed to be life threatening, and the Riverside Police Department said the wounded person would be cited for theft once released from the hospital.

The retired police officer was arrested for shooting at a person, police said.
