Freak Accident as Another Motorcycle Cop Crashes During Funeral Procession

A Cypress motorcycle cop was seriously hurt Friday afternoon as he coordinated the funeral procession for Hawthorne motorcycle cop Andrew Garton who was killed last month while he coordinated traffic from his motorcycle for another officer's funeral motorcade.

The accident Friday evening happened just blocks away from where a funeral was held for Hawthorne motorcycle officer Andrew Garton.  The burial for 44-year-old Garton, who died May 26 after colliding with an El Segundo police motorcycle as the two cleared traffic for the motorcade for a deceased Manhattan Beach police officer, was held Friday at the nearby Forest Lawn Memorial Park.

The Cypress accident happened at 5:30 p.m. near the intersection of Lincoln Avenue and Cobblestone Lane.

The 30-year-old Cypress officer, who has been with the department about four years and has spent a year-and-a-half as a motorcycle officer.

Cypress police spokesman Robert Cote told NBC4 LA the injured officer was taken to the trauma unit at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center.   The initial report from the scene was that the hurt officer suffered several broken bones includning two broken wrists.
