Memorial Day

Free: Farmers Market Music Series Opens

Ride the Tide, Floyd & the Flyboys, and the Jennifer Keith Quintet will all play the landmark's summer shows.

Deciding what to finally order for dinner at the Original Farmers Market at Third & Fairfax?

Call it a delightfully frustrating study in edible indecision, thanks to the plentiful restaurants serving sup-worthy vittles from all points around the planet.

But there's no indecision, nor frustration, nor hemming, nor hawing, when it comes to figuring out how much you'll need to pay to see Summer Music 2017, the public market's every-Friday-night warm-weather music series.

We'll cut to the relief-inducing chase: It's zero dollars, as in nothing, to take in some quality live music, in an array of genres, at a clocktower'd spot that's been charming Angelenos and visitors alike since 1934.

Much of that charm rests in the chow-down-ing possibilities of Farmers Market, yes, but the love for this annual summer sound series is a big feather in the destination's cap. Or, if you prefer, an apple in its famous green carts, which seems more apt.

Date number one at the popular Third & Fairfax hangout is Friday, May 27, the final music night is on Friday is Sept. 1, and along the way? Count on a string of Fridays full of reggae and country and Latin jazz and Andean folk and surf rock.

Actually, surf rock kicks off the whole shebang, on the Friday before Memorial Day, when Ride the Tide steps onto the West Patio stage at 7 o'clock.

And while you might be swayed by the many yummy snacking choices found at Farmers Market, do not be swayed by that 7 p.m. start time, as in, don't saunter in at 6:58. If you want to find a table on the somewhat snug patio, you'll need to depart work promptly at 5:30 (and, as always, clear it with the boss, and then invite the boss along).

Is there dancing? People who are feeling it do, yes. And pitchers of beer, glasses of iced tea, and beignets from the close-at-hand Gumbo Pot have a way of cluttering (charmingly, again) those quintessential mint-green tables at the market.
