Cash for Cats (and Dogs)

Deductions have gone to the dogs.

A state Assemblyman's pet project would let California residents write off many animal adoption fees.

Assembly Bill 233 is the brainchild of Southern California Assemblyman Cameron Smyth, R-Santa Clarita. The deductions would be allowed for animals adopted from local government and nonprofit animal shelters.

About 800,000 cats and dogs are abandoned every year, and local shelters are feeling the effects of feeding and housing all those animals.

"Local governments in California are spending upward of $100 million sheltering animals each year," Smyth said in a news release. "Everyday we hear about people walking away from their houses, and in many cases, they are abandoning their pets as well."

It if passes the plan would begin at the start of next year and be on the books through Jan. 1, 2015.
