Suspect is arrested after trying to flee the scene

A Beaumont construction worker was on life support Thursday after being hit by a suspected DUI driver, who police said tried to flee the scene of the crash.

Barry Steele, 52, was hit at 10:40 p.m. Wednesday by a car as he worked along a closed freeway on-ramp.

Steele was working for Skanska Construction along the 91 Freeway at Van Buren Boulevard when a 1998 Mazda hit a moving Caterpillar loader, a concrete k-rail then struck him on the job site.

The driver tried to run away but was caught by other uninjured construction workers, police said.

Brandi Holmes, 21, of Riverside was arrested and faces drunken driving and hit-and-run charges.

Holmes was allegedly driving on a suspended license and was on probation for a shoplifting conviction in 2009.

A 19-year-old passenger who was with Holmes suffered moderate injuries but was not arrested.
