Fuel Tanker Hauling 8,500 Gallons of Gas Overturns on 10 Freeway in Fontana, Shutting Down Lanes

A stretch of the westbound 10 Freeway in Fontana was shut down Thursday afternoon after a fuel tanker hauling an estimated 8,500 gallons of gas crashed with another car and overturned, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The tanker and a Mitsubishi Galant were driving side by side just before 1 p.m. when the Galant crashed into the front end of tanker, causing the big rig to overturn and hit a tree on the shoulder, according to the CHP. An unknown amount of fuel began to leak from the truck.

The freeway was closed between Citrus and Cherry avenues while the gas was cleaned up and the tanker was removed, the CHP said. Two lanes of the eastbound side remained open.

Both drivers were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.
