Fugitive in LA Standoff Kills Self, Police Say

A seven-hour standoff in Los Angeles between SWAT officers and a fugitive wanted for murder ended Tuesday night when the man killed himself, police said.

The man, identified as 40-year-old Bob Duran, was sought in connection with the shooting death of his 36-year-old estranged wife at a bar on May 9, Los Angeles Police department officials said. He barricaded himself in a first-floor apartment in the 200 block of N. Kenmore Avenue (map), between Beverly Boulevard and 1st Street, about 2 p.m.

Residents in the surrounding area were evacuated and the block was was sealed off as a SWAT team attempted to take the fugitive into custody.

At one point, officers shot tear gas into the apartment, and the man allegedly responded by firing a gun at officers.

"We heard several shots, and there's some evidence that some of the rounds had actually come out of the apartment toward the officers," said LAPD Cmdr. Blake Chow.

No officers were hurt, he said.

Two men who were inside the apartment at the time were able to get away.
