Gang Member Admits to Killing Man: Police

Ernest Lee Culbertson, 31, was arrested on suspicion of murder

Police on Sunday said they have arrested a 31-year-old gang member in connection with the stabbing death of a 51-year-old man in Glendale, a police sergeant said.

Ernest Lee Culbertson, 31, of Tujunga was arrested on suspicion of murder and was being held in lieu of $2 million bail. Investigators will seek formal charges on Monday, Glendale Police Sgt. Robert William said.

Culbertson was arrested in Los Angeles about seven hours after the stabbing attack, William said.

"Based on the investigation, it appears Culbertson and the 51-year-old victim knew each other and this was not a random attack," he said. "It is still unclear what provoked the incident"

"(Culbertson) later confessed to the crime to the detectives,"he said.

Officers responded at 6:12 p.m. Friday to a report of a man down in the 1200 block of East Harvard Street, near Chevy Chase Drive, according to Tahnee Lightfoot of the Glendale Police Department.

They found the man, who had been stabbed, behind an apartment and attempted to revive him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, Lightfoot said.

"A surveillance camera was located near the crime scene,"William said. "The footage did not capture the incident, but did however show a person of interest, who was in the crime scene at the time of the incident"

Police immediately recognized and identified Culbertson, a known documented gang member, with whom they have had numerous contacts and arrests, he said.

Culbertson was eventually located in Los Angeles by Glendale police officers and in the possession of "articles of evidenc" linking him to the crime, William said.
