You gotta fight for your right to be a gay Republican.
"The pressure in politics and stigma of homosexuals still exists, which shows that gays and lesbians still have a long way to go," said Charles Moran, national spokesperson for the Log Cabin Republicans.
Moran talked with NewsRaw's Mekahlo Medina about California State Sen. Roy Ashburn's admission. "The hardest part is to admit to themselves and their families, which is a powerful process, when making the decision to come out of the closet," Moran said.
Sen. Ashburn admitted he was gay after he was arrested, suspected of driving under the influence. Authorities say he just left a Sacramento gay club when he was pulled over by police.
Ashburn cannot seek re-election because of term limits. It's unclear if he'll seek another office.
"People are more concerned with who their elected official is, not their sexual orientation. It's whether they feel they can trust the words coming out of their mouths," Moran said.
