The riskiest crossing in the Metrolink system is getting an upgrade worth $6 million.
A railroad crossing in Glendale identified as the riskiest in the Metrolink system is getting a $6 million upgrade.
The Doran Street crossing ranked No. 1 out of 312 locations. It also ranked in the top eight for accidents.
The ranking is based on a high volume of traffic and the crossing's proximity to Trans-Gas Propane. About 90 freight and passenger trains travel through the crossing a day. The plan's authors, including LA County Supervisor Michael D. Antonovic, also say vehicles repeatedly stop on the tracks.
"If one of those propane trucks gets stuck, you'll have a bomb sitting there," Metrolink spokeswoman Sherita Coffelt told the Los Angeles Times.
The improvements include safety enhancements for the propane company, new crossing gates and signals, and a wider turning radius for commercial trucks.
