Granada Hills Charter High School Wins 2012 California Academic Decathlon

The team will represent California at 31st Annual United States Academic Decathlon Competition

Granada Hills Charter High School on Sunday won the 2012 California Academic Decathlon.

The team scored 52,327.4 points out of 60,000 possible, earning the school the state title this year.

Members of the winning team are Lev Tauz, Sean Wejebe, Hamidah Mahmuch, Christian Koguchi, Priscilla Liu, Kimberly Ly, Jimmy Wu Stella Lee and Julia Wall.

The team will represent the state of California and pursue the state’s 10th consecutive national title at the 31st Annual United States Academic Decathlon Competition, scheduled April 26 – 28, in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

In addition to Granada Hill’s victory, El Camino Real High/LAUSD received the Large School title with 51,279.7, St. Francis High /Southern California Private Schools received the Medium School title with 38,987.9 and University High/Fresno County received the Small School title with 47,105.2 points.

All three high schools will be eligible to compete in the United States Academic Decathlon On-line National Competitions taking place in April.

In Super Quiz, Granada Hills Charter High finished first with 5,585 points out of 6,000 points possible. Franklin High/LAUSD finished second with 5,300 points and Marshall High finished third with 5,225 points.

The winners were announced at the 2012 California Academic Decathlon’s award ceremony at the Sacramento Memorial Auditorium.

Rounding out the top 10 scoring teams were Olympian/San Diego (48,122.5), Franklin/LAUSD (47,943.6), University/Fresno (47,105.2), Edison/Fresno (46,440.2), West/Los Angeles (46,252.7), Oakdale/Stanislaus (45,813.9), and Taft/LAUSD (45,555.4).

The state competition is divided into three divisions based on their regional score: Division I (top 20 highest scoring teams), Division II (next top 20 highest scoring teams), and Division III (next top 25 highest scoring teams).

The format allows teams to compete with other teams of similar scores.

Furthermore, it gives emerging counties the opportunity to experience a state championship and a chance for their decathletes to attain medals for their achievement at a level of competition that best fits their team’s ability.

The top three scoring Division II teams are: Burbank/Los Angeles (43,170.9), Garfield/LAUSD (41,707.3), Stockdale/Kern (41,461.6).

The top three scoring Division III teams are: Woodbridge/Orange (39,004.9), Westlake/Ventura (38,822.7), Redlands/San Bernardino (38,803.3).

In all, 566 students representing 65 high school teams from across the state competed in this year’s California Academic Decathlon.

Teams are comprised of three Honor students (3.75 and above GPA), three Scholastic students (3.00-3.74 GPA), and three Varsity students (2.99 GPA and below).

California has won the last nine national titles and has won fourteen national titles in the past 17 years of national competition.

In 30 years of national competition, California has placed first or second every year but one.
