Greenpeace Dolls Up Mattel Building in El Segundo

Another banner was displayed on a nearby parking structure

Greenpeace unfurled a banner Tuesday on the Mattel building in El Segundo.

The large pink banner with a likeness of a Ken doll was hanging from the exterior of the building Tuesday morning. The banner claims the company's toy packaging is destroying rain forests.

"Barbie, it's over. I don't date girls that are into deforestation," reads the text under Ken's frowning face.

A protester dressed like Barbie showed up with a pink bulldozer.

And, to make sure Ken's message was delivered, another banner was attached to the side of a nearby parking structure.

Greenpeace's campaign is explained on a Facebook page.

Activists rappelled down the side of the building to secure the banner, which was estimated at about 2,500 square feet. A sheriff's department emergency services team was at the location to help the activists back to the roof of the structure.

Eight people were taken into custody, according to authorities. They face trespassing charges.

The banner was removed early Tuesday afternoon.

Mattel released a statement Tuesday: "We have been in communication with Greenpeace on a variety of papersourcing issues. We are surprised and disappointed that they have taken this inflammatory approach. We will continue to assess our paper sourcing and packaging improvements as we move forward."

The Mattel building is in the 300 block of Continental Boulevard.
