Häagen-Dazs Shops: Free Cone Day

Pick your ice cream or sorbet and enjoy it in a cup or cone

One could say, with a general air of being-right-a-tude, that most things in life depend upon excellent, on-the-mark timing.

Perhaps nowhere is this more true than the ice cream freezer. Most desserts, when set out early, won't change shape or consistency, but the melty, scoopable superstar sure will, so planning the exact time the carton of ice cream emerges is key.

You want it soft, but not counter-spreading puddle-soft, we can all agree on.

Timing will also be key on Tuesday, May 9, when Häagen-Dazs Ice Cream Shops give away a veritable ice cream mountain, scoop by scoop by scoop. It's Free Cone Day, but let's jump to the time part ASAP-like: You'll want to arrive at your local shop for that gratis glacial goodie from 4 to 8 p.m. on May 9.

That's 4 in the afternoon. Then 8 in the evening. Between those hours, a pay-nothing cone or cup is 100% gettable, should you stop by a participating shop.

Southern California has a number of Häagen-Dazs destinations, including at The Grove, Glendale Galleria, Fashion Island in Newport Beach, and Downtown Disney.

What will you choose? Green tea? Java chip? What ice cream flavor best represents May 9, in your mind?

Being at your local Häagen-Dazs between 4 and 8 on May 9 isn't the only precise timing surrounding the event. Free Cone Day is also raising awareness about bees, and the flowers and plants they pollinate (many ice cream flavors depend on such flavor-cool flora).

If you're inspired by the message, use a bit of timing back at home to plant a slew of bee-attracting native wildflowers. Spreading the word, too, on our friends the bees, is also part of the lovely, lickable, free-cone-able day.
