Happy Bike Week, Southern California

Special bike events, Bike to Work Day, and other spoke-tastic haps are on the cycle calendar.

If you're following the AMGEN Tour of California, and all of the elite racers that pedal across great swaths of our state in seemingly no time at all, you've likely given a thought to the cycle sitting near the back of your garage.

Or maybe your bicycle leans against your front door, where it usually rests after your daily ride. It matters not if you're a sometimes rider, an infrequent-but-gotta-get-out-more rider, or a cyclist who needs to get in a few miles every day: Bike Month is for everybody.

And that Bike Month spreads out in May, with various local, city-specific Bike Weeks flowering here and there around the middle of the month, and Bike to Work Day on Thursday, May 18, makes as much sense as keeping those spokes shiny. After all, May's weather is warm but not sweat-inducing, and California's biggest bike spectacular is front-and-centered in many a cyclist's mind.

Bike Week LA kicked off on Monday, May 15 with a groundbreaking at Union Station for the new Metro Bike Hub. And Union Station will be the location for Bike Night on Friday, May 26.

Santa Monica's Bike Week is also on, from through May 17, with Bike Local SM specials and more to-dos. As for what's happening at BikeSGV? The San Gabriel Valley cycle-cool org has an architecture ride coming up on May 21, with a caboodle of other Bike Week happenings on the calendar, too.

And if you want to ride gratis throughout May via the Metro Bike Share, you can, with a special code. All the info you need to hop on the loaner bicycle and get rolling is in this direction, so turn your handlebars and pedal there at once.
