Hundreds Celebrate Los Angeles' 235th Birthday

To celebrate Los Angeles' 235th birthday, hundreds of people walked and biked the route from San Gabriel Mission to downtown Los Angeles Saturday to celebrate the city and its birthplace early Saturday morning.

As part of the event titled "Celebrate Our Heritage Walk and Bike to L.A.," locals planned to travel the nine mile route between the San Gabriel Mission to El Pueblo de Los Angeles Historical Monument at Olvera Street in downtown Los Angeles—a route that mirrors the one taken by the founding families of Los Angeles, Los Pobladores, in 1781.

Walkers started the trip to downtown Los Angeles at 6:30 a.m., while bikers started their trip later at 8 a.m.

After a ceremonial walk from Union Station to El Pueblo Historical Monument, a ceremony and presentation will be held at the final stop.

A free bus is available to transport participants back to San Gabriel following the event. No road closures are in place for the celebration.

The city officially celebrates its birthday on Sept. 4.
