Haunted Hotel Movies at Hotel Erwin

Dare you watch "The Shining" on one night and return for "Psycho" the next?

SPOOKY CINEMA? It isn't always about cobwebby castles and low-lit, foreboding moors. Horror films moved to the suburbs over the decades, and other unlikely locations, and some of the best-known works take place inside hotels and motels. Two of the most famous skin-prickling films, Stanley Kubrick's "The Shining" and Alfred Hitchcock's "Psycho," have given millions of viewers chills at the mere thought of empty lobbies, long hallways, front desks, and showers. Seeing the movies, though, today? It typically involves renting them from the comfort of your couch, or heading to a revival cinema, or a special screening event, if you want to see one or both on the big screen. But watching them at a real hotel is a pretty novel experience, a chance that doesn't come around all that often. But Hotel Erwin in Venice is stepping up to the spooky plate with a double-dose of hotel-motel horror just in time for Halloween 2017. That's right, Jack Torrance and Norman Bates will call upon the hip stay-over, at least via the screen, on...

FRIDAY, OCT. 20 AND SUNDAY, OCT. 21: "The Shining" is up first, on Friday night, while the black-and-white motel thriller will roll on Saturday. Larry's Loft, the art-filled event space on the hotel's 5th floor, will be the pop-up cinema, and movie goers may enjoy a "theatrically-themed cocktail menu and snacks from the loft's bar." The most unscary part of the two-nighter? Both films of the Movie Madhouse Weekend are free to attend. This is open to guests ages 21 and older, do note, and also note that the Barlo Kitchen + Cocktails, the Hotel Erwin restaurant, will be open ahead of both films, if you'd like to make a reservation for dinner. So seeing a hotel/motel screamer inside an actual inn? It might be a first for a lot of brave people in attendance, one that's bound to have a lot of atmospheric cred. Eek.
