Hazmat Leak Causes Road Closures in Santa Fe Springs

Leak reported from a 40,000-pound tanker filled with carbon dioxide.

A carbon dioxide leak from a 40,000-pound tanker prompted authorities to close roads in Santa Fe Springs early Tuesday morning, firefighters said.

The leak was reported around 2 a.m. at Airgas, Inc., a dry ice production company in the 9800 block of Jordan Circle. Firefighters responded to a report of tanker leaking carbon dioxide behind the building, according to Santa Fe Springs Fire Department.

Whittier Police Department was at the scene assisting with road closures.

Airgas released a statement Tuesday explaining that the carbon dioxide tanker was connected to a storage tank when "a release of product" occurred. The company was investigating the cause of the release.

The company said one person was injured and sent to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Airgas added that it evacuated its associates as a precaution. At the time the company released its statement around 6:45 a.m., the facility remained shut down.

Airgas said it was working with authorities and emergency personnel at the scene.
