It's going to be sizzling in Southern California Tuesday with near-record temperatures reaching the 90s in a few places and high wind warnings in effect for much of the region.

Angelenos need to brace for a heat wave that is expected to last through the weekend. Temperatures will be on average 15 to 25 degrees above average this week, with record reaching temperatures on Wednesday and Thursday.

It is possible that temperatures could reach 100 degrees in a few locations later this week, with the valley and inland areas feeling the worst of it.

Coastal cities will be warming up as well with temperatures in the high 80s near the beach.

The combination of warm weather and offshore winds will contribute to the above-average temperatures throughout the week.

Whittier is expected to reach a blistering 94 degrees. Downtown Los Angeles won't be far behind, reaching a high of 91 degrees Tuesday.

If you live near the beach or plan on driving west to Santa Monica to cool off, expect a warm 84 degrees by mid-day.

Some Orange County beaches will feel hotter than their neighbors to the north with Laguna Beach reaching a high of 88 degrees Tuesday.

Hot temperatures are stretching north to Santa Barbara where temperatures are expected to reach 82 degrees.

This comes as drought-plagued California is desperate for cooler temps and rain. Gusty Santa Ana winds and the hot weather won't be helping dry conditions. With humidity levels dropping throughout the week, fire dangers increase.

Officials recommend that people limit outdoor activities, drink plenty of water and dress in loose fitting, lightweight clothing this week.
