Hemet's West Valley High Headed to California Academic Decathlon

Hemet's West Valley High School will represent Riverside County at the California Academic Decathlon next month, after emerging victorious over nearly two dozen other teams that competed in the countywide decathlon.

West Valley took first place in the 33rd annual Riverside County Academic Decathlon after multiple rounds that began on Jan. 30.

During the decathlon finale Saturday, the Hemet team edged out a team from Elsinore High School, which took second place, followed by Corona High School in third place, according to the county Office of Education.

Including the most recent occasion, West Valley has won first place seven times in the last eight contests, losing to Hemet High School in 2014.

Twenty-four teams participated in the decathlon, held over two consecutive weekends in the gym of Heritage High School, in the Perris Unified School District.

Youths were required to complete essays, make speeches and defend theses in interviews conducted by independent panels.

Saturday's event included a Super Quiz during which teams were given 10 seconds to come up with answers to a variety of questions, officials said.
