‘Herb Alpert: A Visual Melody' Opening in Palm Desert

The legendary musician's artworks will go on view at Heather James Fine Art beginning on Saturday, Feb. 17.

MUSIC AND THE VISUAL ARTS... have long worked in joyful tandem, and it is no surprise that hearing a favorite piece, or seeing a sculpture that is especially moving, can bring an unrelated song or painting or experience to mind. Such is the nature of the creative spirit and force; there's a lot of flow through the various corners of that which we make. Herb Alpert has explored much of that flow over the years, both with The Tijuana Brass and traveling on his own musical journeys as well as burgeoning into an acclaimed painter and sculptor, too. In fact, looking upon one of Mr. Alpert's sculptures and paintings, with their curves, beauty, and grand forms, can inspire the viewer to think of jazz, or a brassy tune, the kind of tune the icon has long been famous for playing on his trumpet. The connection, then, is clear, but how to encounter the artist's visual works, in person, when you know his musical contributions so very well? You don't need to look too far, if you're in Southern California, for "Herb Alpert: A Visual Melody" is set to open at...

HEATHER JAMES FINE ART... on Saturday, Feb. 17. The opening of the exhibit coincides with Modernism Week in Palm Springs, which adds another element to the creative flow — architecture — and you can bet many mid-century fans will stop by the Palm Desert gallery to experience another side of a musician they adore. Expect to encounter a number of "... abstract mixed-media paintings and large and small-scale bronze sculptures" in the collection, a grouping that will be on view through the final day of May 2018. This is not the first time that the acclaimed artist's works have received their own show; you may have seen Mr. Alpert's splendid pieces at Art Fair Basel, the Tennessee State Museum, or the Pasadena Museum of California Art, which comprise just a few of the spots that have featured the multi-talented creative force.
