High School Student Death Blamed On Drinking

"An incredible leader, extremely well-respected...by everybody in the community.”

A South Pasadena High School student would have turned 18 on Monday, but the prominent student leader died over the weekend at a party, apparently of an alcohol overdose. Grief counselors were on campus to help classmates deal with the sudden loss.

The South Pasadena High School’s web site posted the news Sunday, saying police had said Aydin Salek's death was presumed to be due to an alcohol overdose.

“Something like this is shocking in any case, but I think you’ve identified with Aydin, it’s particularly shocking,” said Joe Shapiro, South Pasadena Unified Superintendent. “An incredible leader, extremely well-respected and admired by everybody in the community.”

On Monday morning students gathered on the campus courtyard where they raised a giant poster and balloons. Instead of homeroom, they crowded outside for a moment of silence to remember Salek.

Salek was heavily involved at the school as a student body officer, a writer for the Tiger newspaper, a member of the swim team and the student representative on the district's board of education.
