High Speed Police Chase on Surface Streets

A stolen car suspect led Los Angeles patrol officers on a 20-mile chase Thursday night blowing red lights and driving wildly on surface streets.

It all started in Echo Park when police tried to pull over the reported stolen vehicle.   The thief decided to run and jumped onto the 101 freeway southbound at a high rate of speed and zipped down to the eastbound 60 freeway.

Once on the 60 he drove like a mad man -- speeds up to 90-miles-per hour -- until he got to the Garfield exit.  That's when things got really scary.

The suspect drove up to 80 mph on surface streets roaring down Garfield Avenue running red lights.

After about ten minutes on surface streets the suspect pulled into a gas station at Rosemead and Whittier in Pico Rivera.  He ran over to a bus bench and sat down.

Pursuing officers were not fooled and the suspect took off almost running into a Target store before a patrolman tackled him.

There were no major accidents during the chase.
