It's time to trade the umbrella for a wind breaker. Fierce winds are expected to lash the Southland Tuesday on a sunny but chilly day, when high surf will pound the coast, National Weather Service forecasters said.
A high wind warning will be in force from 9 a.m. Tuesday until 3 a.m. Thursday in the Antelope Valley and the mountains of Los Angeles County, excluding the Santa Monica range, the NWS said. In the Santa Clarita Valley, a less serious wind warning will be in effect during the same time.
Forecasters said the Antelope Valley and the San Gabriel Mountains in Los Angeles County would be swept Tuesday and Wednesday by sustained northwest winds of between 20 and 35 miles per hour, gusting to 60 mph.
"The strongest winds will occur through the interstate 5 Corridor," according to an NWS advisory.
Along the coast, the surf is expected to measure 4 to 7 feet, with local sets of 9 feet possible, forecasters said, adding that the highest surf will occur along west-facing beaches.
The high surf will generate strong rip currents that will make swimming dangerous, an advisory said.
