A 3-year-old boy was hospitalized Monday after he was hit by a car right in front of his mother and police hope new surveillance video will help them catch the driver.
The crash happened in a parking lot in Highland on Saturday.
In surveillance video a group of people can be seen heading out the front door of a laundromat, including several children who were inside playing video games.
In the video, the boy in a blue shirt disappears from the camera view as he walks between two parked cars. Witnesses say he was following his mother to their car. Seconds later, a commotion can be seen as people realize the little boy was hit by a truck.
Kenneth Tolliver ran outside and saw the little boy lodged under the wheel of the truck.
"He was on the inner side of the wheel and instead of him moving forward he actually started going backwards and drug the kid," Tolliver said.
Witnesses say they screamed at the driver to stop.
He took off out of the driveway and drove down East Baseline Street, said Tim Malveaux.
As he backed up out of the parking lot, the driver plowed into a small tree that once stood at the entrance, witnesses said.
"And I chased him but he was driving really crazy and running red lights I couldn't keep up with him," Malveaux said.
San Bernardino County Sheriff's investigators described the vehicle as a 1997 Ford F150 with the license plate number of 5H14823.
The boy is recovering from his injuries at a hospital.
