Homeowner Shoots Intruder in Norwalk

The man had a knife, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department officials said.

An intruder shot by a Norwalk homeowner early Sunday morning was still recovering in the hospital on Tuesday.

A man with a knife attempted to break into a house on the 1400 block of Graystone Avenue at about 2:30 a.m. on Sunday, Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Norwalk Station officials said.

"The suspect attempted to enter the residence by breaking through some doors at the rear of the house," Lt. Jeff Dusky said.

The homeowner shot the man in the upper torso, authorities said. Deputies detained him about a block away from the house.

A neighboring resident said she heard a gunshot that sounded like a firework, and later saw drops of blood on the sidewalk. City staff later cleaned the blood.

"It did scare me," Lizbeth Campechano said. "My window was open, so my dad had to come and try to close it."

Children were in the house at the time of the shooting, but were not hurt. The intruder was sent to St. Francis Medical Center and as of Tuesday was in stable condition. His name was not yet available for release.

As of Tuesday afternoon the homeowner did not face charges, Dusky said.
