“Hot-Boarding” Accident Leaves Man in Critical Condition

A man riding behind a car on a skateboard was hospitalized in critical condition Sunday and the driver who was towing him was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving.

Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies said Edward Culhane, 35, was "hot-boarding" behind a vehicle driven by Ryan Howell, 33, when Culhane crashed on Cedarfalls Drive about 5 p.m. Saturday.

Culhane suffered head injuries and was taken to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital, where he was reported in critical condition.

Howell was booked on suspicion of felony driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol, deputies said.

Another "hot-boarding" accident May 1 in Ocean Beach left a San Diego County man critically injured. The skateboarder let go of the vehicle towing him and collided head-on with a pickup truck in the roughly 2:30 a.m. accident on Point Loma Boulevard.
