One person was killed when powerful blasts and fire destroyed a home in Fontana.

The explosions, which blew the door of the attached garage into the street, began at about 9:15 p.m. in the 14400 block of Southwood Drive. Houses on both sides of the two-story residence also burned, but firefighters limited the damage and extinguished the fire in about 35 minutes.

"At first I thought it was an earthquake," said Jose Delgadillo, who lives next door.

The 50-year-old male victim's name was not released.

"The fire was blowing out every opening of the house," said a captain with the San Bernardino County Fire Department. "It blew a garage door clear across the street. We weren't able to make entry for a quite a while. We had our hands fulll trying to protect the other structures."

The garage door landed about 30 to 40 feet across the street.

Authorities are attempting to determine the cause of the fire.
