House Fire in Carson Leaves 1 Dead, 1 Hospitalized

A woman was killed and a man was critically injured after a house caught fire Thursday night in Carson, authorities said.

The fire was reported around 10:30 p.m. in the 2500 block of East Adams Street, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Firefighters responded to the scene and put out the fire, officials said.

The victims, believed to be a couple possibly in their 70s, were inside the home when the fire occurred. Both were taken to a hospital where the woman later died, said Wayne Holston, of Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Neighbors described the home to be in "pack-rat" conditions, and said the couple appeared to be collecting cans, bottles and boxes.

A stack of papers up to 4-feet high was found inside the house. Arson investigators said materials and debris inside and outside the house fueled the fire, which appeared to have started in a front room of the house.

The cause of the fire was classified as undetermined, accidental, officials said.
