A section of East Sierra Madre Boulevard in Sierra  Madre is closed to through traffic until at least Saturday because of a giant  sinkhole, police said Monday.

The sinkhole, which is about 75 feet by 41 feet, developed last  Wednesday after a 10-inch water main burst in the 400 block of East Sierra  Madre Boulevard, Sierra Madre police said.

Traffic going in both directions has been halted until repairs are made.

"Until the water main is replaced and the roadway is resurfaced, the  road has been closed to all but residents of the immediate neighborhood," police said in a statement.

The break involves the same water main that caused a sinkhole two years  ago at Mountain Trail Avenue and Grandview Avenue -- about four blocks from the  new sinkhole.

"This is a critical link in providing service to all of Sierra Madre's  water customers," police said in the statement
