Hundreds Reach Out to Homeless At Mission's Thanksgiving

More than 2,500 of LA's less fortunate will be served at the Fred Jordan Mission's annual event.

As many people woke for Thanksgiving morning with their families in Los Angeles, hundreds of volunteers were already heading downtown to give a hand to others who may not have somewhere to go for the holiday.

More than 2,500 homeless people were fed Thursday at the Fred Jordan Mission on Skid Row, helped by more than 800 volunteers.

"LA is the greatest city in America, but yet it’s also the homeless capital of America," said Tom Jordan, executive vice president of the 70-year-old mission.

"On any given night over 80,000 needy people will be living here on the streets in LA County," he said.

Tables and chairs filled the street, set up to accommodate the enormous holiday banquet. After the meal, the men, women and children who attended were also given gift bags filled with produce and hygiene products.

More than 2,000 pounds of turkey, stuffing and other trimmings will be served, all donations from local businesses, residents, churches and other community groups.

"We can all do our part," Jordan said. "We all have so much to be thankful for."
