Huntington Beach Police Officer Shot During SWAT Debriefing

The officer was hospitalized with a gunshot wound to the leg

A Huntington Beach police officer was accidentally shot in the leg Wednesday night after a SWAT unit debriefing at the police station, according to authorities.

Several officers surrounded the officer as he was transported on a gurney into the hospital. The wounded officer underwest surgery early Thursday.at UCI Medical Center.

The officer's injuries are not considered life-threatening.

Officers told NBC4 a weapon discharged as officers were cleaning their guns at about 10 p.m. Wednesday. A round ricocheted off the floor and struck another officer in the leg, according to police.

The Orange County Sheriff's Department will investigate the shooting in accordance with department policy regarding an officer-involved firearm discharge.
