A driver was in critical condition Thursday morning after he crashed his pickup truck into a parked SUV in Santa Ana and injured a family of four inside as he was being chased by police while high on methamphetamine, police said.
All four victims -- a husband, wife and their sons, aged 8 and 10, suffered non-life-threatening injuries in the crash. The collision occurred at the intersection of Brown and Garfield streets about 7:10 p.m. Wednesday, said Santa Ana police Cmdr. Eric Paulson.
Officers pulled a male driver over for an unspecified narcotics-related violation, but he sped off, triggering a chase, Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said.
The man was on probation and later admitted to being high on methamphetamine, he said.
He was identified Thursday as Garrett James McKinnon, 27,o of Santa Ana.
McKinnon was hospitalized with a broken leg after the pickup truck he was allegedly driving rolled in the crash, Paulson said. He was expected to be booked on suspicion of DUI, felony evading and violating his probation.
A female passenger in the pickup was taken into custody uninjured and booked on suspicion of a narcotics-related violation, Paulson said.
