Jake Lamb's Grand Slam Brings Dodgers Back to Earth in 6-3 Loss to D-backs

Jake Lamb hit a game-winning grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning and the Arizona Diamondbacks came from behind to shock the Los Angeles Dodgers, 6-3, in a potential postseason matchup on Tuesday at Chase Field. 

The Dodgers entered the day 16 games ahead of the Snakes in the N.L. West Division, but with Arizona leading the Wild Card Race, a potential five-game NLDS matchup with the Dodgers could be in the cards in early October. 

If Tuesday's matchup in the Desert was any indication of things to come, the Dodgers might want to cancel the victory parade down Vin Scully Avenue.

Things got off to a great start for the Boys in Blue as Justin Turner hit a homer into the upper deck in the fourth inning.

After a double by Cody Bellinger, Logan Forsythe gave the Dodgers a 2-0 lead with an RBI single up the middle.

Chris Iannetta got the D-backs on the board with a solo shot to deep center field in the fifth inning to cut the lead to a run, but once again it was Justin Turner who put the Dodgers back in front by two, with his second home run of the game.

Turner has now homered in three consecutive games, and recorded his sixth multi-homer game of his career. 

After a home run by Jake Lamb put the Diamondbacks back within a run, J.D. Martinez thought he had tied the game with a solo shot to right field, but Yasiel Puig had other plans for the newest member of the Snakes.

Despite his gold-glove defense in right field since entering the league in 2013, the home run robbery was Puig's first of his career. 

The Dodgers went to the bullpen early, but with a runner on second and one-out, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts went signaled for newly acquired left-hander Tony Watson.

"I loved the matchup," Roberts said. "As good as Jake as, I'll take Tony against him any day. He left the slider up, he didn't even put a good swing on it, but he elevated it, and unfortunately for us it hit the foul pole."

Watson was acquired at the trade deadline from the Pittsburgh Pirates for his ability to get out left-handed hitters after the Dodgers were unable to trade for Baltimore's Zach Britton or San Diego's Brad Hand.

Watson loaded the bases for left-hander Lamb, and promptly allowed a grand slam that put the Diamondbacks in front 6-3.

"There's two pitches I would love to have back: the hit by pitch to Rosales and the one to Lamb," Watson said of the grand slam deathblow. "I had the right pitch selection, just didn't execute. He kept it fair and made me pay."

Arizona became just the second team since July 4^th to defeat the Dodgers, with the Atlanta Braves being the only other team in baseball to beat L.A.

The loss was only the second of the season for the Dodgers after taking a lead at any point in the game.

According to Elias Sports, the Dodgers loss snaps a 49-game win streak in games they led by 2+ runs, the longest streak since the 2001 Mariners (53 straight).
