James Gandolfini's untimely death Wednesday left the actor's fans and colleagues "shocked" and "heartbroken," as evidenced in countless social media posts lauding the actor as a legend who broke the mold.

Best known for his role as mob boss Tony Soprano, Gandolfini died while on holiday in Italy. He was 51, and is survived by his wife and two children.

As word spread of Gandolfini's death, an outpouring of grief, love, shock and reverence flooded social media in memory of a man who is being called a gentle giant, inspiration, brother and best friend.
