Brewery Lofts Shooting Victim ID'd as Idaho Football Player Ken McRoyal

Ken McRoyal was entering his senior season with the University of Idaho football team

A former Carson High School and El Camino Junior College football player was shot and killed Sunday after a fight at a party in Lincoln Heights.

The victim was identified Sunday as 22-year-old Ken McRoyal, a University of Idaho football player. He joined the Vandals football program in August 2011 after playing at El Camino Junior College.

McRoyal, the father of a 2-year-old girl, was visiting his family.

"It's a devastating loss,'' Idaho head football coach Robb Akey said in  statement released by the university. "We've lost a brother, a teammate, a  family member. But more importantly, a momma lost her son today. All of our  prayers go to the family that they can be strong in their healing from this  tragedy."

McRoyal, from New Orleans, moved to Southern California with his family in 2005 after Hurricane Katrina. He played at wide receiver and was entering his senior season for the Vandals.

On his Facebook page, McRoyal commented May 1 that he was leaving for Idaho to sign his scholarship. On Friday, he posted, "Back to Cali to spend time with my daughter, Memorial day BBQ with my family, and work out 24/7."

No arrests have been made in connection with the shooting, which occurred at about 1:30 a.m. at the Brewery Lofts Arts Complex. The shooting occurred during a party at the residence in the 600 block of Moulton Avenue.

"Detectives believe that the victim got into a verbal dispute at a  party with a small group,'' Officer Cleon Joseph, an LAPD spokesman, said in a statement. "During the dispute, one of the men shot the victim and left the  scene.''

A second shooting victim was hospitalized with a gunshot wound to the arm, police said.

Police asked anyone with information regarding the shooting to contact  Hollenbeck homicide detectives at 323-342-8961 or 323-342-8957. Tipsters  can also call 1-877-527-3247.
