Suspected Kidnapper Found Dead in Torrance Motel After Hours-Long Standoff

A man suspected of kidnapping his ex-girlfriend barricaded himself in the hotel early Thursday morning, forcing guests to evacuate

A suspected kidnapper was found dead inside a South Bay motel Thursday afternoon after he allegedly abducted a woman at gunpoint and holed himself up inside a rented room for more than 10 hours, police said.

Th Super 8 motel was evacuated overnight after police responded to the 2300 block of Sepulveda Boulevard, just east of Crenshaw Boulevard in Torrance.

The 22-year-old woman, kidnapped at gunpoint by her ex-boyfriend in Redondo Beach about 3:20 a.m., was released and found at the hotel by 5:15 a.m., authorities said.

She is "safe with police," according to the Redondo Beach Police Department.

Police found the man dead inside the bathroom from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound just after 3 p.m., Redondo Beach police said.

Nearby streets remained closed during the investigation after the standoff. Aerial video showed police, several patrol vehicles and an armored SWAT vehicle at the motel.

Guests were escorted from the property overnight.
