Ever talked about a kitten who had only just passed her first or second month's birthday?
Then you probably employed a lot of words that ended in "-est," as in "littlest" and "sweetest" and "tiniest" and even "weest." For a four- to eight-week-old feline is just about the tiniest, sweetest, cuddliest cutie around, and few people would dare argue this point.
But such tiny, wee cats aren't ready for adoption just yet, meaning dedicated care is in order. Enter the brand-new Kitten-Garten Kitten Nursery at the Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA.
The just-debuted area, which opened on Thursday, Aug. 24, isn't on view to visitors to the Raymond Avenue shelter, but you can bet that the miniature meowers are getting all of the TLC they need behind the scenes.
And TLC they do need, indeed: The historic society is working with both The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and the County of Los Angeles Department of Animal Care and Control "...to care for this vulnerable population."
The projected goal, which will be made possible by an ASPCA grant of $325,000? "(T)o save the lives of 1,000 kittens per year."
The residents of the Kitten-Garten will hail from LA County's Baldwin Park Animal Care Center. And though those humans who stop by the Pasadena Humane Society can't coo at these furry balls of love through a window, take heart: When the kittens grow larger and stronger they'll take up residence in the organization's Neely Cat Center, which does welcome visitors.

Of course, despite its charming name, Kitten-Garten isn't about the activities and pursuits we non-cats enjoyed back when we were kindergartners.
But the new addition to the longtime animal center will help the littlest, bittiest felines grow big, feisty, and fabulous, even if they aren't required to sing the alphabet or learn to tie their sneakers.
