St. Louis residents Lou and Marianne Rotter donated Rams apparel to a Los Angeles nonprofit after the football team's relocation. The two jerseys will be featured in a silent auction to benefit the homeless beginning Thursday, Aug. 11, 2016.

A Los Angeles nonprofit is holding a silent auction beginning Thursday in hopes of raising money for the poor and homeless.

The silent auction features two Rams football team jerseys donated by a couple from St. Louis.

When St. Louis resident Lou Rotter heard his home team was returning and relocating to Los Angeles, he was shocked. Rather than sell or burn his team apparel, Rotter and his wife Marianne decided to donate it to St. Vincent de Paul in LA.

The Rotters mailed the jerseys along with a handwritten note to the Catholic volunteer organization. Chris Sariego, SVdPLA's spokesman said the organization is touched by the cross-country donation.

"I opened the box and there they were," said Alfred Rodriguez, SVdPLA's operations director. "I thought 'awesome!'"

Lou Rotter said he and his wife have a "soft spot" for the organization because SVdP sponsored Marianne's mother when she came to the United States from Germany following World War II.

The silent auction begins Thursday, Aug. 11 and ends Sept. 18, giving winning bidders enough time to pick up their jerseys for the team's first home game at the LA Memorial Coliseum.

The proceeds will help the poor and homeless in LA.

To enter the silent auction for the Rotters' Rams apparel, visit the security desk by the front door of the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Store at 210 North Ave. 21 in LA.
