Los Angeles has hit a new green record by distributing blue recycle bins to more than 400,000 apartment buildings, according to the LA Times.

That translates to more than 1 million renters who are now able to recycle thanks to officials' efforts. The city now diverts 65% of its waste away from landfills and mayor Antonio Villaraigosa hopes to hit 70% by 2013, the Times said.

The mayor and City Council President Eric Garcetti said the city's recycling program is a one of the city’s major environmental achievements.

The blue bins allow users to recycle a variety of materials including paper, plastic, cardboard, aluminum, plastic foam and wire hangers. They used to only be provided to single-family homes and smaller apartments until 2007 when the program expanded.

There are still 123,000 apartment buildings in the city that do not have the them, according to the Times.

Renters who want them can request them by dialing 311.
