LA Zoo Unveils Healthy Baby Giraffe

Animal lovers can now set eyes on LA Zoo’s newest family.

Weighing in at 135 pounds and standing 6 feet tall, giraffe calf Sofie was born at the zoo on April 22. She is the first baby for zoo’s female giraffe Hafina, and fathered by Artimus.

The family (pictured below) can be seen daily during zoo hours: 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Zoo officials announced Sofie's birth this week. She was named after the great-granddaughter of zoo donor Robert McMillan.

Masai giraffes are found in southern Kenya and eastern Tanzania. LA Zoo officials say captive populations of the tall animals are becoming more important as poachers continue to target giraffes throughout Africa.
