Cause of Underground Vault Blast Remains Under Investigation

An investigation is underway to determine the cause of an underground vault explosion in Hyde Park on Sept. 6, 2017.

Nine days after an explosion in an underground vault destroyed a stretch of neighborhood street, crews continue to investigate the cause.

Gas and power teams are looking at whether high levels of natural gas were at fault for the Sept. 6 explosion at Brynhurst Avenue and 63rd Street in Hyde Park, in South Los Angeles.

Los Angeles Department of Water and Power officials said none of their equipment was involved in the explosion. There were no power outages after the blast tore sheets of concrete and asphalt more than half a foot deep.

Southern California Gas company officials found elevated methane levels in the soil two blocks away from the site of the explosion.

Crews are replacing gas lines and pipe running through the vault.

The California Public Utilities Commission, the state's utility oversight agency, is monitoring the site during cleanup.
