Police Unleash Barrage of Gunfire, Killing Armed Man on Hollywood Apartment Balcony

Multiple rounds of gunfire can be heard in a cellphone video.

A man, who was armed with a gun, died after he was shot by officers outside of a Hollywood apartment complex, authorities said early Friday.

Los Angeles Police Department officers responded to a man with a gun call at around 10:55 p.m. Thursday in the 7200 block of Hillside Drive, said Sgt. Munoz of the Hollywood station.

The man and his roommate had a dispute, during which the roommate called police. When officers entered their fourth floor apartment, the man armed himself with a weapon. He was given several commands to drop his gun, which he ignored, Munoz said, and police started firing.

A second shooting by police occurred when the man went out to a balcony with his weapon. It's unknown if he shot at officers.

The man was treated by medical crews at the scene, where he later died.

A witness said he went outside of his apartment after hearing some commotion and saw police officers with their guns drawn. He said the officers told him to leave because there was a man with a gun on the fourth floor balcony.

The witness then described hearing a "barrage" of gunfire and estimated at least 30 rounds were shot.

Video from the scene shows the glass doors of an upper-floor balcony completely shot out. Yelling from officers and multiple rounds of gunfire can be heard in a cellphone video shot by a witness.
